contents: This first edition of the "Camera Obscura" by the 25-year -old Leiden student of theology, Nicolaas Beets, (pseudonym: Hildebrand) and published by the Erven F. Bohn in 1839, merely contains some ten sketches. Only in later editions was the book augmented to its present size. It appeared in an edition of 1150 copies and was at once tremendously popular: a second edition appeared within half a year. The edition is typical of its time as a reading book: a title page in steel engraving with an illustration of a scene in the book, for the rest printed on mediocre to poor paper and not illustrated.
