contents: In 1750 Hendrik Scheurleer was the first in the Netherlands to start a 'leesbibliotheek', i.e. a (commercial) lending library. The books in his shop in The Hague were not only for sale, but could also be borrowed. His list consisted of scientific works in all sorts of fields, which people who were eager to learn but could not permit themselves the purchase of an expensive book, could borrow. Followers of the Enlightenment, to which Scheurleer belonged, considered wide dissemination of useful knowledge to be of paramount importance.
