contents: Jozef Israëls is one of the most significant painters of the Hague School. His representations are simple, but have great emotional value. As early as the 1850s he often chose the poor existence of the fishermen in Zantvoort and Katwijk as his subject. The painting 'Langs Moeders graf' (By Mother 's grave) (Stedelijk Museum , Amsterdam), is from 1856. In 1872 this book was published (in a second edition) with steel engravings by J.H. Rennefeld and with rhymes by Nicolaas Beets.
