contents: The cylinder press, where a cylinder rotated over the solid type matter, was introduced around 1830 and although known around 1855, only in general use after 1880. It meant a revolution in the printing world. The iron hand press was quickly outdated. Steam power allowed an additional increase in speed at lower costs. A double cylinder press such as this one could be operated on two sides, allowing double production.
