contents: This is a picture from a treatise on the infantry and their use of arms, consisting of 117 plates in three volumes, based on the military ideas of Prince Maurice and designed and engraved by Jacques de Gheyn II, commissioned by the States General. Jacques de Gheyn, originally from Antwerp, did a lot of commissioned work for Leiden University circles. Around 1598 he had already started this particularly influential and spectacular edition, but its publication was time and again postponed because it was feared that the enemy might also be able to profit from it.
