contents: The "Hollandse Merkurius" had appeared annually since 1651 in Haarlem and was a chronicle of all events that had taken place in the preceding year. The attractiveness of the work was enhanced by the frontispiece and all sorts of illustrations in the text. The publication was a great success as can be seen from the reissues and reprints.
