contents: In this pen drawing by the Delft painter Leonard Bramer (1596-1674) a pedlar is depicted selling almanacs. In his right hand he holds a sheet of paper with the text: `what miracle, what news', and in his left hand the text: `new almanacs'. Pedlars and singers called at both towns and villages and sold their wares by singing songs, making music (with a violin or hurdy-gurdy), calling their merchandise out loud and reciting short verses. Established booksellers saw this as dishonest competition and attempted to have their liberties restricted by the town council.
