contents: A basin with water was prepared in such a way that paint could float in it. Simple aids were then used to produce patterns in it. The edges of the books were brushed with alum so that they would absorb the paint. By placing the edges precisely on the surface of the basin with water and paint, the marbler was able to apply the colour patterns to the edges.
