contents: The print shop of A.W. Sijthoff in Leiden in operation. When the machines were running there was a deafening noise because 'presses of all sorts and sizes whirred and buzzed there'. There were broad lanes between the presses with rails on which carts rode around bringing the paper from the store. Everything at Sijthoff's was set up so that the greatest yield was obtained from both man and machines. The workshops were all on one floor, the premises had daylight and the whole company was electrically powered. Also noticeable was 'the great concern for the hygiene of personnel in all the premises and the high degree of neatness everywhere'.
