contents: Even from the 16th century, almanacs had been enlivened with miscellanies: rhymes, farces, stories, information, etc. It would, however, take until the end of the 19th century, the golden age of literary almanacs, before these would overtake the calendar. The almanac of Muses was particularly popular at that time, often, a calendar was not to be found in them. They were nicely designed literary anthologies which were brought out once a year with the same title but in varying bindings. The luxurious annual booklet, Holland, appeared from 1849 to 1866 and was edited by Jacob van Lennep.
