The binding is attributed to an anonymous Amsterdam bookbinder, called `Kircher-binder', because he bound many books by Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a German theologian who had a great part of his publications published in Amsterdam. The work of the Kircher-binder is strongly connected with that of the master bookbinder Albert Magnus, also active in Amsterdam.
