contents: In 1567, through the patronage and financial support of King Philip II of Spain, Christopher Plantin was able to publish his "Biblia Polyglotta" (also known as the "Antwerp Polyglot" or "King's Bible"). Furthermore, Philip sent the Spanish theologian Benedito Arias Montano to Antwerp to superintend the scholars responsible for the different texts and commentaries. Plantin printed 1,213 copies of this monumental edition, on four different kinds of paper, and with prices varying from 70 to 200 guilders. 23 copies on special paper and on vellum were destined for the patron (Philip II) only. The publication of this Bible was to bring Plantin into severe financial difficulties, as the king's support did not meet the expectations raised.
