contents: From the invention of the art of printing up until the end of the 18th century, only the kind of wooden handpresses which are shown here were used. Apart from some embellishments and improvements, the construction remained more or less unchanged. Nothing much changed therefore in working methods. On the left we can see a sheet of paper on the tympan and, above that, the frisket has been opened up. A printer is inking the composition using two ink balls. The printer on the right is operating a second press where the frisket and the tympan have been folded onto the composition.
