contents: Early illustration of a bookbinder at work. The first owner of a book normally commissioned a binding. The sheets were folded into gatherings and sewn with thread on bindings of leather, vellum or cord. Then the bookbinder sewed the boards of wood or cardboard together, and covered it all with leather or vellum. The finishing also included putting on clasps or furniture of silver or brass, or ties of leather and textile. Then tooling could take place.
